A Dry Riser is defined as; a vertical water supply pipe installed in a building for fire-fighting purposes, fitted with inlet connections at fire service access level and landing valves at specific points, which is normally dry but is capable of being charged with water usually by pumping from fire and rescue service appliances. The difference between a Dry and a Wet Riser is that water is immediately available for fire-fighting.
Dry riser testing & maintenance applies to all buildings above 18 meters and below 60 meters (above 60m a wet riser would be required). All dry risers should be subject to a wet test once a year and a visual inspection every 6 months by qualified engineers.
A wet test involves engineers filling each dry riser stack with water and ensure that the pressure holds at 12 bar for the duration of 15 minutes for the stack to comply to BS 9990: 2015. If your premises has more than one dry riser, each stack should be maintained and tested to receive the appropriate certification and comply with the regulations.
Routine dry riser testing ensures that in the event of a fire, the fire brigade have all tools available to them, in good working order, to support them in their bid to save lives. At Secure Fire Protection Ltd we carry out the dry riser wet testing and inspections in accordance with guidelines as detailed in British Standard BS9990 : 2015.
