Your local water supplier is responsible for installing and maintaining fire hydrants that are in the public domain but this is not the case for fire hydrants on private property. Private fire hydrants can be installed by water suppliers or private companies and the responsibility for maintenance and testing lies with the site owner, occupier or operator. Sites such as universities, hospitals, retail parks and distribution centres are all responsible for the maintenance of their own hydrants.
Regular hydrant testing ensures that in the event of a fire, the fire brigade have all tools available to them, in good working order, to support them in their bid to save lives.
At Secure Fire Protection Ltd we carry out the annual fire hydrant inspection in accordance with guidelines as detailed in British Standard BS9990 : 2015.
During our annual inspection visit we will;
- Inspect hydrant pit and cover conditions
- Inspect signage visibility and information
- Record pressure tests in BAR
- Record flow test in litres per second
- Inspect the depth of valve and outlet
- Issue certificate of inspection on completion of works
**Testing is an annual requirement for all private property owners in the UK where fire hydrants are present.**
